Getting To Our Feet – June 25, 2009

1. Getting To Our Feet – June 25, 2009

For many months we had been talking about making a short film. We came up with ideas and wrote short summaries. We imagined where we might film this or that scene. One hot Thursday, in the end of June, Casey came up with yet another...

August 2, 2009 – The Second Day of Filming…

It was a hot, sunny, Sunday afternoon after church… August just isn’t the time of year to film a movie but we had a deadline and it was only two weeks and two days away, so we had no other choice! Preparations alone took at least an hour – tidying the rooms of the house (the scenes would be filmed in my family’s home and car), printing and framing the photographs, last minute ironing, changing into the right clothing, getting hair done, making sure the script didn’t need any last minute revisions… the list went on and on.

When Mr. Kirkpatrick arrived, he set up his camera and with him came a young lady named Amy. After more running around, we decided to film the car scenes first. My Dad was playing the main character in those scenes, so he, Casey, Mr. Kirkpatrick, Amy and I, prepared to go out to the van. Dad drove, Mr. Kirkpatrick filmed, Casey directed from the middle seats and Amy and I sat in the back. To avoid conflicting sounds, Andre had informed us that the air-conditioning had to be off during filming, so while Dad drove around the neighborhood under the lens of the camera, the five of us were baking in an oven-like vehicle. Worth it – but miserable all the same! Perhaps the most interesting part was watching Mr. Kirkpatrick hang out the door of the moving van to get a shot from the outside – too bad my camera was dead!

Back at the house again, it was time to film the “house scenes”. We were using two different rooms and eight people were acting in the scenes. This took the rest of the afternoon and most of the evening.

Once again, the air conditioning would pose a problem for filming, especially since we were using the boom mic this time. No fans, no air conditioning – nothing to cool the house in August. Add to that, the fact that there were probably thirty of us in the house and we had two huge lights simultaneously illuminating and heating up the rooms (And making blowing a fuse if they were left on longer than ten minutes!) and it was hot. Since one of the lights were located outside the window, this dear lad sat outside nearly the entire time, waiting to hear a knock on the window or a shout, so that he would know when to turn the lights on and off, to prevent a blown fuse!

I confess, I was quite skeptical as to whether we would manage to finish all the filming that was scheduled in this one afternoon. Our director was confident that we would – and I think he was about the only one who was. It seemed like so much to accomplish in one afternoon – too much to hope for. It was after nine when we finished filming everything needed for the house scenes. I couldn’t believe they were done! We still had one more scene to film – in the attic. So we headed out and began to set up. Half an hour later we were finished – I couldn’t believe it – the day had finally ended – and with success!! We only had one more day of filming ahead! What a day that turned out to be – but that’s another story – or another chapter – at least, another post. :D
